Backing Up the Zimbra Server

Backing up the Zimbra server on a regular basis can help you quickly restore your mail service if an unexpected crash occurs or individual accounts need to be restored.

You can configure the backup modes that meet your Zimbra Collaboration Server environment needs, either:

You set the backup mode either globally or per server. In global settings, you can configure the email addresses to receive notification about the results of the backup. The default is to send the notification to the admin account.

Backup sessions are listed under specific servers. Select a server and the Backups Content pane lists the backup labels for the last 30 days.

Procedure to Configure Backup as a  Global Settings
  1. On the Home page, click Configure Back-ups in the Getting Started column.

  2. Select the backup mode, either standard or auto-grouped.

  3. If you select auto-grouped, configure the number of groups to spread the mailboxes over.

  4. For auto-grouped backup, you might need to set the throttling option. Enabling Throttle automatic backups limits the mailbox count in a daily backup to T/N. This breaks the constraint of backing up all mailboxes in N days, but it helps backup to finish during off hours.

  5. In Default Backup target, configure the directory where the backups are saved. The default is /opt/zimbra/backup.

  6. The next steps are to configure the notification email.

    1. In the Notification email sender text box, enter the email address of the account that will send the notification address (From address).

    2. In the Prefix for notification email subject text box, type the subject of the email notification that is sent.

    3. In the Notification email recipients text box, enter the email addresses that should receive the notification.

  7. Configure Backup minimum free space to the amount of free space required on the backup target disk before a backup session is run. If the disk has less space than the value set, the backup session does not run and an email notification is sent to the administrator.

  8. Click Save.

Procedure to Configure Backup per Server
  1. Go to Configure>Servers and select the server to edit.

  2. Select the Backup/Restore page.

  3. Select the backup mode, either standard or auto-grouped.

  4. If you select auto-grouped, configure the number of groups to spread the mailboxes over.

  5. For auto-grouped backup, you might need to set the throttling option. Enabling Throttle automatic backups limits the mailbox count in a daily backup to T/N. This breaks the constraint of backing up all mailboxes in N days, but it helps backup to finish during off hours.

  6. Configure Backup minimum free space to the amount of free space required on the backup target disk before a backup session is run. If the disk has less space than the value set, the backup session does not run and an email notification is sent to the administrator.

  7. Click Save.
